Post emergence Safe Crabgrass Killer</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6W4p06N6qAE/U8MENCkWRAI/AAAAAAAABjE/RfxlYZMSLS8/s1600/IMG_20140713_170751003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6W4p06N6qAE/U8MENCkWRAI/AAAAAAAABjE/RfxlYZMSLS8/s1600/IMG_20140713_170751003.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is crabgrass. Yeah, I admit I have crabgrass. The only downside to my new ecological lawn is that crabgrass preventive would also kill off the flowers and microclover in my lawn. Microclover is awesome, it means never fertilizing your lawn.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway, the crabgrass has to go. Preferably using something that wouldn't also kill my dogs or harm the environment. Well, I finally found something that works. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c2USzjoeu_8/U8MGE2bV5wI/AAAAAAAABjQ/-jPqsuBGKYI/s1600/IMG_20140713_170503621.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c2USzjoeu_8/U8MGE2bV5wI/AAAAAAAABjQ/-jPqsuBGKYI/s1600/IMG_20140713_170503621.jpg" height="640" width="358" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But you first have to get the crabgrass wet. You can use just water or a mix of water and dishsoap for an extra punch. Or throw the sprinkler on the area. The goal is get the plants wet to give the baking soda something to stick to. Other people have even mixed some molasses in the water, I didn't find this necessary.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HDS0PcWp1lg/U8MHdSJBtXI/AAAAAAAABjc/9K9_FKe4Xks/s1600/IMG_20140713_170432155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HDS0PcWp1lg/U8MHdSJBtXI/AAAAAAAABjc/9K9_FKe4Xks/s1600/IMG_20140713_170432155.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sprinkle your victim with baking soda. Use generously, however, be careful as this will kill the grass too.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4tGuV321fnE/U8MIYUgMmkI/AAAAAAAABjo/HwqQQWKQtCI/s1600/IMG_20140713_165902747.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4tGuV321fnE/U8MIYUgMmkI/AAAAAAAABjo/HwqQQWKQtCI/s1600/IMG_20140713_165902747.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And now wait, it takes a few days. Heat helps. If it is really hot, this seems to work faster and better. The crabgrass above was treated 3 days ago. </div>

<span style="font-size: small;">Today's project is more for the ladies out there, magnetic makeup boards. So I have been using mineral makeup for years now and those little containers can be an OCDs nightmare. I've tried many ways to organize them and still be able to see all the colors. I'm a huge Everyday Minerals fan and the lids on their containers are white and the container itself is clear. So if I can see the bottom of the containers, which also happens to have the color name on the bottom, then life is good. So I bring you, the magnetic makeup board.</span></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial,Tahoma,Helvetica,FreeSans,sans-serif; font-size: 22px; font-weight: normal; margin: 0.75em 0px 0px; position: relative; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">What you need: </span></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial,Tahoma,Helvetica,FreeSans,sans-serif; font-size: 22px; font-weight: normal; margin: 0.75em 0px 0px; position: relative; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;"></span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><br />A frame of your choice, can be any size and shape you want. I am using two 11" x 14" frames I found at my local hobby store.</span> <br />
<br />
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-6243213571706767584" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.4; position: relative; width: 570px;">
<h3 style="margin: 0px; position: relative; text-align: center;">
</h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--B0fen8-mPk/U7bbG7n0QSI/AAAAAAAABg8/LVWsQOxsu1I/s1600/IMG_20140703_193026027.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--B0fen8-mPk/U7bbG7n0QSI/AAAAAAAABg8/LVWsQOxsu1I/s1600/IMG_20140703_193026027.jpg" height="223" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">A galvanized sheet of metal. I scored this one at my local big box home improvement store in the welding department for $10.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0owveEd-I6w/U7bbH65XzBI/AAAAAAAABhM/0lnYp4CvWeQ/s1600/IMG_20140703_195551887.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0owveEd-I6w/U7bbH65XzBI/AAAAAAAABhM/0lnYp4CvWeQ/s1600/IMG_20140703_195551887.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">If you frame came with glass, take that out, then if your mirror came with backing you have an instant template. Cut your metal sheet to fit that size. Resemble your frame and ta-da.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-urgg_t01PP0/U7bbKVIIH2I/AAAAAAAABh8/mWBnn0k7nlY/s1600/IMG_20140703_203746120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-urgg_t01PP0/U7bbKVIIH2I/AAAAAAAABh8/mWBnn0k7nlY/s1600/IMG_20140703_203746120.jpg" height="223" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Now the magnetism part. You will need one hot glue gun, some magnets ( I used 6 mm magnets, bought really cheaply online) an orange stick or wood stick of some kind helps save your fingers and a piece of aluminum foil. Oh and your makeup containers.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tV8J9_SH07Q/U7bbGw4QiSI/AAAAAAAABhA/-8fzPqx8M2o/s1600/IMG_20140703_195438750.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tV8J9_SH07Q/U7bbGw4QiSI/AAAAAAAABhA/-8fzPqx8M2o/s1600/IMG_20140703_195438750.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Now just dab on some glue in the center, place a magnet, the wood stick really helps for this and the secret, immediately press the magnet side down onto a sheet of aluminum foil. This flattens and levels the glue so that the glue does not end of up higher than the magnet so the magnet makes good contact.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8rZocfZzZPs/U7bbK6eZt4I/AAAAAAAABiE/9aWnvnEzDjE/s1600/IMG_20140703_204050103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8rZocfZzZPs/U7bbK6eZt4I/AAAAAAAABiE/9aWnvnEzDjE/s1600/IMG_20140703_204050103.jpg" height="355" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> These cool really fast. In a minute or two they will be ready and can be peeled off the foil.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ki_JsVRnBG8/U7bbLIsClPI/AAAAAAAABiM/PRYDrSHr8tY/s1600/IMG_20140703_204638497.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ki_JsVRnBG8/U7bbLIsClPI/AAAAAAAABiM/PRYDrSHr8tY/s1600/IMG_20140703_204638497.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-size: small;">You can even do tubes. These are powered mineral makeup in a roll on tube. Lipsticks work great too. I used one magnet per tube or small jar, 2.5 gram, and two or three magnets on the large containers, 5.5 gram.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3oj0e81VaEM/U7bbIQpnW5I/AAAAAAAABhU/2Li5la3jsL4/s1600/IMG_20140703_200703477.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3oj0e81VaEM/U7bbIQpnW5I/AAAAAAAABhU/2Li5la3jsL4/s1600/IMG_20140703_200703477.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">And the finished product. </span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This is bonus storage for any of you lucky people that own Ikea cabinets. The sides and backs of the drawers are metal. So...magnets stick to metal. I am using the drawers sides to store all kinds of things. It works fabulous for lipsticks and such. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g1kEt8w6zrg/U7bhZpCJ5uI/AAAAAAAABik/VHRfi4IVdkw/s1600/IMG_20140704_113521013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g1kEt8w6zrg/U7bhZpCJ5uI/AAAAAAAABik/VHRfi4IVdkw/s1600/IMG_20140704_113521013.jpg" height="223" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Blushes attached to side of drawer. </span></div>

<br />
<b>Bonus tip for all you mineral makeup users: </b><br />
<br />
And if your going to the craft store, pick yourself up one of these. They are in the painting supply isle. They are super cheap, talking .99 cents here or less. They are great for applying color, mixing with mediums, or just using to apply dry powers with a wet brush and not contaminant your main container.</div>

The Grand Plan</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
March 2014</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And it begins....the great thing about building a house on a new acreage is the landscaping is a blank slate. The bad thing about building a house on a new acreage is the landscaping is a blank slate. We have nothing but a lot of dirt, some miscellaneous piles of gravel and cement left by the construction crews, and alfalfa, mmm...so chewy. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here's our starting point.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C4yUwpOZzZY/U0SoHiUnk-I/AAAAAAAABUQ/BOIIL8x_6RE/s1600/IMG_20140330_101727313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C4yUwpOZzZY/U0SoHiUnk-I/AAAAAAAABUQ/BOIIL8x_6RE/s1600/IMG_20140330_101727313.jpg" height="356" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4BIwKPcU5t4/U0SoXytZW7I/AAAAAAAABUY/Zy3Wq7oRiAI/s1600/IMG_20140330_102117125.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4BIwKPcU5t4/U0SoXytZW7I/AAAAAAAABUY/Zy3Wq7oRiAI/s1600/IMG_20140330_102117125.jpg" height="356" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And the back. It's a little like House on the Prairie; we need just a little less prairie and a little more garden.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UfGznguAMPY/U0So-KZ_lSI/AAAAAAAABUg/2URbUJmvj6o/s1600/IMG_20140330_102131008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UfGznguAMPY/U0So-KZ_lSI/AAAAAAAABUg/2URbUJmvj6o/s1600/IMG_20140330_102131008.jpg" height="358" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's what were we working with folks. It's mostly alfalfa, some weeds, a tiny bit of grass and some ground squirrels and a lot of clay soil. We do have the alfalfa on our side as this land as been an alfalfa field for years, so we should have quite a bit of nitrogen in the soil (alfalfa is a nitrogen-fixing plant, remember 7th grade science). <br />
<br />
So the grand plan:<br />
<br />
A whole of experiments... <br />
<br />
First thing, a windbreak. A hedge row and trees to go around the property to stop everything from ending up in Kansas. And as a bonus we are using some edibles as hedges.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A dry river bed that crosses the front yard. It's called a rain garden, we divert the water from the house rain gutters into this "riverbed" landscaped with various flowers, bushes, ornamental grasses, and ground covers.<br />
<br />
Ornamental flowers around the front porch with various pathways.<br />
<br />
Some potted plants for the front porch.<br />
<br />
Hedges, bushes, and trees to add height and contrast. <br />
<br />
And a mix of no/low mow grasses and groundcovers to fill in the rest.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And for the back yard</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
low mow grass/flower mix for a "yard", yep we are going to attempt starting a lawn from seed. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then a large vegetable and fruit garden. We will be experimenting with a bunch of types of gardening<br />
<br />
the traditional, just plant it in the ground<br />
square foot gardening<br />
Earth Tainer<br />
the gutter system<br />
wicking beds<br />
pallet gardening<br />
container gardening<br />
an African gardening method called keyhole gardening <br />
and maybe even some aquaponics.<br />
<br />
Add an orchard comprised of compact high density fruit trees ( more on this later). A compost area, fire pit and then maybe later we'll throw in some egg laying chickens to the mix. That should keep me busy for a while.</div>

Industrial Whisk Lighting Project</h2>

<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div align="center">
I picked up these industrial whisks on Ebay some time ago and we finally get around to turning them into hanging lights for the kitchen. They are 10-13 quart sized whisks from Hobart mixers. I have been waiting for this project for months.</div>
<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T9dKxz4_oVE/U1hzGAEoHpI/AAAAAAAABVU/fR9iwy8Wiy0/s1600/IMG_20140413_103356580.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T9dKxz4_oVE/U1hzGAEoHpI/AAAAAAAABVU/fR9iwy8Wiy0/s1600/IMG_20140413_103356580.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
Here's how large the whisks are compared to my hand. Best part of this project is that no whisks were harmed in anyway, so just in case you ever get an industrial mixer and need to whip up, I don't know, say 13 quarts worth of egg whites, you can just take apart your light fixture. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LyV-BjBdWK8/U1hzX8yr65I/AAAAAAAABVY/4gmHN4QALHw/s1600/IMG_20140413_103443806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LyV-BjBdWK8/U1hzX8yr65I/AAAAAAAABVY/4gmHN4QALHw/s1600/IMG_20140413_103443806.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You will also need some 1/6" twisted metal cable. We picked this up at Ace Hardware. They sell it by the foot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5uJWnkEyC_Q/U1h2n47zFBI/AAAAAAAABV0/z7As8JJdgrY/s1600/IMG_20140413_104106210.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5uJWnkEyC_Q/U1h2n47zFBI/AAAAAAAABV0/z7As8JJdgrY/s1600/IMG_20140413_104106210.jpg" height="222" width="400" /> </a></div>
<br />
Some 1/6" Ferrules and Stops and a washer for each whisk. The two packages above are both Ferrule and Stop sets from different manufacturers. You will need one pack (two ends) per light. What size of washers?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U5ykSGClf50/U1h3BItbaqI/AAAAAAAABV8/Hdh2dJO_OuQ/s1600/IMG_20140413_110319843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U5ykSGClf50/U1h3BItbaqI/AAAAAAAABV8/Hdh2dJO_OuQ/s1600/IMG_20140413_110319843.jpg" height="400" width="223" /></a></div>
</div>
<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div align="center">
Depends on the size of your whisk. You want the washer to be narrow enough to slide in through the slot in the whisk. But the whisk narrows at the top, so the washer needs to be large enough that it wedges in the whisk and can't fit through the top diameter. The picture above probably illustrates this better than I can explain it.</div>
<div align="center">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qNRGLhA5NoY/U0q1okeD-JI/AAAAAAAABUw/NpH5cduRv0U/s1600/IMG_20140413_103250253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qNRGLhA5NoY/U0q1okeD-JI/AAAAAAAABUw/NpH5cduRv0U/s1600/IMG_20140413_103250253.jpg" height="221" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We are starting with three regular mini pendant light fixtures you can get them from the big box store. <br />
<br />
Step 1- turn off the power to the lights, unless you really like to live dangerously and don't care for your eyebrows<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1nCI1CT7cr0/U1h4HrFrBlI/AAAAAAAABWI/ezvcee_4fPY/s1600/IMG_20140413_105505816.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1nCI1CT7cr0/U1h4HrFrBlI/AAAAAAAABWI/ezvcee_4fPY/s1600/IMG_20140413_105505816.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Disconnect your light fixture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A1GbHbF98B4/U1h4gq39zuI/AAAAAAAABWQ/jFQ8GcoNtOs/s1600/IMG_20140413_105337328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A1GbHbF98B4/U1h4gq39zuI/AAAAAAAABWQ/jFQ8GcoNtOs/s1600/IMG_20140413_105337328.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
And mark the wires for easy reassembly later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4db1xsx8QbY/U1h5KBYxXyI/AAAAAAAABWc/jWqQAbXT1Zk/s1600/IMG_20140413_103133346.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4db1xsx8QbY/U1h5KBYxXyI/AAAAAAAABWc/jWqQAbXT1Zk/s1600/IMG_20140413_103133346.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
Measure how long low you want your light to hang.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ACyJFo83fKs/U1h5ckxCH2I/AAAAAAAABWk/37j_8yRzn-I/s1600/IMG_20140413_111719729.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ACyJFo83fKs/U1h5ckxCH2I/AAAAAAAABWk/37j_8yRzn-I/s1600/IMG_20140413_111719729.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Loop one end the wire through the washer and secure by running it through a Ferrule and squeezing the metal together. Run the wire through the whisk and wedge the washer in the top as pictured above.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qsE1H2UoblQ/U1h6wMmHQFI/AAAAAAAABW4/OmXHa6q5-wM/s1600/IMG_20140413_112620973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qsE1H2UoblQ/U1h6wMmHQFI/AAAAAAAABW4/OmXHa6q5-wM/s1600/IMG_20140413_112620973.jpg" height="400" width="223" /></a></div>
<br />
Run the other end of the wire through the light fixture's base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wNqRrgXrMzY/U1h6ajFoRjI/AAAAAAAABWw/2yUTISDPwNU/s1600/IMG_20140413_111738640.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wNqRrgXrMzY/U1h6ajFoRjI/AAAAAAAABWw/2yUTISDPwNU/s1600/IMG_20140413_111738640.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You will need to hold up your light fixture and trim the wire to slightly shorter than the lights electrical cord so that it supports the weight of the light. This picture demonstrates the difference in length.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UAvWWN5hzfg/U1h7b9IM1AI/AAAAAAAABXE/409QM3gM5_o/s1600/IMG_20140413_113542985.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UAvWWN5hzfg/U1h7b9IM1AI/AAAAAAAABXE/409QM3gM5_o/s1600/IMG_20140413_113542985.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Secure the other end of the wire in the base with the second Ferrule stop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l8YJz-VRR48/U1h7vuh_buI/AAAAAAAABXM/pSJG52bL-bo/s1600/IMG_20140413_114553807.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l8YJz-VRR48/U1h7vuh_buI/AAAAAAAABXM/pSJG52bL-bo/s1600/IMG_20140413_114553807.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
Rewire your light fixture, insert light bulb, and that's it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V_LRaDDmKWc/U1h8TZQ9lVI/AAAAAAAABXY/IxfhBG9COjk/s1600/IMG_20140417_201104288.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V_LRaDDmKWc/U1h8TZQ9lVI/AAAAAAAABXY/IxfhBG9COjk/s1600/IMG_20140417_201104288.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
I found several whisks with different sizes and shapes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-27YX2WyVf6E/U1h8UZ_C4nI/AAAAAAAABXg/VgFl37vXWGc/s1600/IMG_20140417_201116462.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-27YX2WyVf6E/U1h8UZ_C4nI/AAAAAAAABXg/VgFl37vXWGc/s1600/IMG_20140417_201116462.jpg" height="640" width="358" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gdn0EAzO8Tc/U1h8jIMvWQI/AAAAAAAABXo/QG7IaFptFAo/s1600/IMG_20140417_201025086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gdn0EAzO8Tc/U1h8jIMvWQI/AAAAAAAABXo/QG7IaFptFAo/s1600/IMG_20140417_201025086.jpg" height="222" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And when you're all done, turn the power back on.</div>

We broke out the Graco Magnum x5. It's a refurbished unit I picked up online from <a href="http://www.cjspray.com/">www.cjspray.com</a> I was a little reluctant to buy a refurbished unit but this one works great and the customer service was awesome. The first time we used it we had a problem with the hose that came with it and they took care of it right away. This unit is so fabulous, we were able to paint this door with a brush mark free finish in under 5 minutes. We also painted all the interior door with this thing, but that's another post.</div>

We had the contractor, L & M Covenant Construction, put the floors in the bathrooms, the laundry/mudroom, and the second bedroom upstairs. Because, well, we're a little busy with other projects. And lesson one folks, if you are doing DIY, know your limits. Pick the projects that you have the time to complete, the tools do it right, and the ability. Frankly, we saved a lot more money spending our time doing countertops and the kitchen and let the pros do their job on the floors. And we really wanted to move in sometime soon.</div>

The first thing they did is lay down another layer of 5/8" subfloor. This brought the floors up to about the same level as the hardward floors will be so there will be a smoother transition between floors and it really provided a much smoother surface than the rough plywood subfloor that is underneath.</div>

The flooring is a luxury vinyl from Spacia. It is a commercial flooring in Weathered Oak. It looks like aged wood, but is waterproof and no grout lines to clean. It basically gets glued down in individual planks. We had tile and faux tile cement in our last house and this is so much warmer on your feet.</div>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">
Let there be light. And it was good.</h3>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
January 2014</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Time to turn something boring, into fabulous.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6QBVyyeQOcY/Uztp0FjQjsI/AAAAAAAABNk/ofTac2wZM3Y/s1600/IMAG1185.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6QBVyyeQOcY/Uztp0FjQjsI/AAAAAAAABNk/ofTac2wZM3Y/s1600/IMAG1185.jpg" height="400" width="225" /> </a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is boring, that will work. The main light fixture in the master bedroom. We added a medallion to the base when the electrician installed the wiring to give this light more substance. This is a light fixture from Ikea, yes, I might be a tad Ikea crazy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sbTAVydSSCA/UztqDSVa9DI/AAAAAAAABN4/oLfLv4_hMQs/s1600/IMAG1191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sbTAVydSSCA/UztqDSVa9DI/AAAAAAAABN4/oLfLv4_hMQs/s1600/IMAG1191.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you can get through the cryptic instructions from Ikea, yet get something like this. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IKt353i_a4A/UztqDlwFNAI/AAAAAAAABN8/7-BT0CTGLNQ/s1600/IMAG1192.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IKt353i_a4A/UztqDlwFNAI/AAAAAAAABN8/7-BT0CTGLNQ/s1600/IMAG1192.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And about 82 of these, it's from Ikea, some assembly required. Plus you can play he loves me, he loves me not while assembling.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e4u3dWyKvCg/UztqEvMeWkI/AAAAAAAABOM/BUgR2iT2g4c/s1600/IMAG1194.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e4u3dWyKvCg/UztqEvMeWkI/AAAAAAAABOM/BUgR2iT2g4c/s1600/IMAG1194.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Tada...fabulous. I love waking up and seeing this every morning.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xGck0OVBUbw/UztqPA_AfVI/AAAAAAAABOY/F23J6L0zVgU/s1600/IMAG1196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xGck0OVBUbw/UztqPA_AfVI/AAAAAAAABOY/F23J6L0zVgU/s1600/IMAG1196.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the shadows it cast at night are awesome. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9Rzbo58mZyU/UztqPtCurtI/AAAAAAAABOc/ZeZyb6e12xE/s1600/IMAG1197.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9Rzbo58mZyU/UztqPtCurtI/AAAAAAAABOc/ZeZyb6e12xE/s1600/IMAG1197.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a> </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am forever renaming this light the "Dandelion Puffball Light"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R9JCyuspvAg/Uzt6Yy26XxI/AAAAAAAABQQ/_PxEpqsNTeM/s1600/IMAG0980.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R9JCyuspvAg/Uzt6Yy26XxI/AAAAAAAABQQ/_PxEpqsNTeM/s1600/IMAG0980.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
What is the light really called. It's a Maskros which just happens to be Swedish for giant dandelion puffball light. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ntPsY9wcQVA/UztvFRdZmmI/AAAAAAAABO0/N8s0_748O9A/s1600/IMG_20140401_205257677.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ntPsY9wcQVA/UztvFRdZmmI/AAAAAAAABO0/N8s0_748O9A/s1600/IMG_20140401_205257677.jpg" height="400" width="223" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bedroom also has this in the entryway, it's a miniature chandelier. Because every girl should have a miniature chandelier and pony. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bda9TJyj7wY/UztvFTBtWqI/AAAAAAAABOw/gSxytlFDJi8/s1600/IMG_20140401_205508952.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bda9TJyj7wY/UztvFTBtWqI/AAAAAAAABOw/gSxytlFDJi8/s1600/IMG_20140401_205508952.jpg" height="223" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Why, yes, it is also from Ikea, the light, not the pony. What's it called?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kn9NsGLzjK8/Uzt63uGpwwI/AAAAAAAABQY/poqRnhG6UyA/s1600/IMAG0987.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kn9NsGLzjK8/Uzt63uGpwwI/AAAAAAAABQY/poqRnhG6UyA/s1600/IMAG0987.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
It's the Kristaller.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
January 2014</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dLX4fIomQck/Uu8Us6N5flI/AAAAAAAABCE/NMueygj09j0/s1600/IMAG0923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dLX4fIomQck/Uu8Us6N5flI/AAAAAAAABCE/NMueygj09j0/s1600/IMAG0923.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Okay, where were we on the kitchen. Oh, yeah, base cabinets are in. Giant oven cabinet and wall oven installed. Seems like we are still missing a few things. I know, countertops, and that's where it gets interesting. Yep, we're going to be making some zinc countertops. I liked the look and even better the price. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_364Syf4F50/Uu8UVNV-8kI/AAAAAAAAA_4/OtiF67fXMqE/s1600/IMAG1033.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_364Syf4F50/Uu8UVNV-8kI/AAAAAAAAA_4/OtiF67fXMqE/s1600/IMAG1033.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
First some supplies. 3/4" hardwood plywood. Yes, hardwood, not the super cheap plywood because we actually want a countertop that is flat. Two of these glued together should give us a nice 1 1/2" countertop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pKlCLxGYAJ8/Uu8UZO8ov0I/AAAAAAAABBI/Wfo3S7-q-vs/s1600/IMAG1047.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pKlCLxGYAJ8/Uu8UZO8ov0I/AAAAAAAABBI/Wfo3S7-q-vs/s1600/IMAG1047.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These seem a bit large.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We cut them down to leave us a 1" overhang on the cabinets and a 12"
overhang on the side of the peninsula for serving drinks,
I mean seating.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Looking better already. We stagger the seams for a more sturdy structure and to prevent problems with joints expanding. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next up on the supply list, Liquid Nails and some other construction adhesive we had on hand.</div>

Apply this stuff everywhere, the board, your hands, on your tools. It's
really not bad, just spread it around everywhere, I used a paint stick
for this. <br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then we drilled some screws immediately after putting the top piece on to compress the sheets together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the adhesive dried, we waited 24 hours, we took out the screws and I filled the holes with wood putty.</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oOtMjuj5YIc/UvBUj-L6aEI/AAAAAAAABDs/39XNqQXgLXY/s1600/IMAG1117.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oOtMjuj5YIc/UvBUj-L6aEI/AAAAAAAABDs/39XNqQXgLXY/s1600/IMAG1117.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a> </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also filled any joints and gave the whole top a rough sanding.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the completed substructure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rMC5SDSvkLI/UvBZtTz2XvI/AAAAAAAABF0/GkaB9pqElyQ/s1600/IMAG1110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rMC5SDSvkLI/UvBZtTz2XvI/AAAAAAAABF0/GkaB9pqElyQ/s1600/IMAG1110.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the small section to the right of the sink cabinet. The empty spot is for the dishwasher.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YdOO2YD9Ijc/Uv4fD4yJddI/AAAAAAAABJo/jy5MnP_mlp8/s1600/IMAG1162.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YdOO2YD9Ijc/Uv4fD4yJddI/AAAAAAAABJo/jy5MnP_mlp8/s1600/IMAG1162.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now the large section, my parents are in town, so we take the opportunity to have my mom, dad, sister, Brian, and I left the countertop off the cabinets and put in on saw horses in the living area. This way we can access all sides and we don't damage the cabinets with all the hammering and grinding. The countertop isn't that heavy, just very large. How large you ask?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yi6N5zYDzJU/Uv4fCqx1gSI/AAAAAAAABJc/GrT2V5ymmo4/s1600/IMAG1160.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yi6N5zYDzJU/Uv4fCqx1gSI/AAAAAAAABJc/GrT2V5ymmo4/s1600/IMAG1160.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
12'8" x 11'11"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GA_Q2AHCgzQ/UvBYSR5lf5I/AAAAAAAABE4/h-nMWttXf0s/s1600/IMAG1086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GA_Q2AHCgzQ/UvBYSR5lf5I/AAAAAAAABE4/h-nMWttXf0s/s1600/IMAG1086.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The countertops arrive. Yep, there's coutertops in this box, must be some assembly required. We ordered our zinc sheets from Rotometals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JXVXw_NNGIE/UvBYUB8LUnI/AAAAAAAABFU/jphw3yNJoaU/s1600/IMAG1090.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JXVXw_NNGIE/UvBYUB8LUnI/AAAAAAAABFU/jphw3yNJoaU/s1600/IMAG1090.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also purchased some solder, Cupric Sulfate, and some sealant from them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TE3Tnh6wzhY/UvBa1r12WrI/AAAAAAAABGM/Y4FGFxtQFqg/s1600/IMAG1091.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TE3Tnh6wzhY/UvBa1r12WrI/AAAAAAAABGM/Y4FGFxtQFqg/s1600/IMAG1091.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the zinc sheets, we used .20 gauge. They will come rolled up and the first thing we did is unroll them the opposite direction and lay them flat. Do this as soon as you get them as the longer they stay rolled up the harder it will be to get them flat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wT61nj3Htfs/UvBatI0abNI/AAAAAAAABGI/mLTXmclgbUs/s1600/IMAG1094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wT61nj3Htfs/UvBatI0abNI/AAAAAAAABGI/mLTXmclgbUs/s1600/IMAG1094.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
They roll out really easy. We weighed the sheets down with Ikea drawers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5SHvqMeWTdA/UvBcJalK1gI/AAAAAAAABGk/-15kPpDue7Q/s1600/IMAG1126.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5SHvqMeWTdA/UvBcJalK1gI/AAAAAAAABGk/-15kPpDue7Q/s1600/IMAG1126.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After a couple days of laying flat the sheets are ready to be cut. We start with the baby countertop section. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WHVd7R3PnTE/UvBcKha0V3I/AAAAAAAABHA/isPYWmAVKDU/s1600/IMAG1128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WHVd7R3PnTE/UvBcKha0V3I/AAAAAAAABHA/isPYWmAVKDU/s1600/IMAG1128.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We cut the first countertop with some hand shears, then we upgrade to an electric metal cutter later. Remember kids to wear gloves while handling the sheets, these suckers can be sharp. Those are metal working gloves, you will need some, because finishing
this project with bandages over your stitches would be rather
cumbersome. And for you ladies out there, you maybe out of luck and
have to get a men's size small, I looked everywhere and didn't find any
women's metal working gloves. (yeah and don't run with the shears either)<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bLwX4Y3PglM/UvBcK0rq8kI/AAAAAAAABG0/hooVTjcBIXc/s1600/IMAG1129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bLwX4Y3PglM/UvBcK0rq8kI/AAAAAAAABG0/hooVTjcBIXc/s1600/IMAG1129.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We use clamps with some wood, so the surface doesn't get dented, to hold the sheets in place. Then we bend the crap out of the one long side. This is a process of me grabbing the opposite end of the countertop and pushing on the bend with my legs until a bend starts. And then beat the crap out of it with a rubber mallet until we have a nice bend.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9uVB2QUG-js/Uv4hMgp_8PI/AAAAAAAABMA/l3HJyTCJHpQ/s1600/IMAG1215.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9uVB2QUG-js/Uv4hMgp_8PI/AAAAAAAABMA/l3HJyTCJHpQ/s1600/IMAG1215.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we get a nice bend in the sheet, we loosen the bend enough to get the sheet off the plywood and now we are going to glue the metal sheet to the wood. Coat the plywood with Sikaflex construction adhesive. This stuff is kind of expensive, about $7 a tube. We tried one countertop with a mix of this and another adhesive. I would highly recommend using Sikaflex for this step. This stuff dries to a rubber cement kind of texture, it's rubbery and stretchy. Other adhesives will dry hard. Hard adhesives will crack and don't allow any movement of the countertop which will happen with changes in tempatures (think hot pans) etc. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z32SJJzV28s/Uv4gg7Hc8JI/AAAAAAAABLE/WjO3IhXFpS8/s1600/IMAG1182.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z32SJJzV28s/Uv4gg7Hc8JI/AAAAAAAABLE/WjO3IhXFpS8/s1600/IMAG1182.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The gray stuff in the pic is the Sikaflex. Brian is applying it and I am spreading it evenly with a 1/8" notched plastic trowel. You can find one of these in the flooring department for putting down adhesive for vinyl floors. This stuff is thick and it takes some muscle work to get this spread around. So prepare yourself for a workout.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1RfaVXPaRmE/Uv4fgCRtTZI/AAAAAAAABJ4/2reJ6dTfesM/s1600/IMAG1167.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1RfaVXPaRmE/Uv4fgCRtTZI/AAAAAAAABJ4/2reJ6dTfesM/s1600/IMAG1167.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qq78Eu1p488/UvBe_23pfII/AAAAAAAABHM/Z2mqhNDafYg/s1600/IMAG1130.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qq78Eu1p488/UvBe_23pfII/AAAAAAAABHM/Z2mqhNDafYg/s1600/IMAG1130.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the adhesive was evenly spread, we placed the zinc sheet on and then weighed the whole thing down and clamped all the edges. What else do you use a bunch of exercise weights for? Well and a few more Ikea drawers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k6kfHzE5FVI/UvBcMJ8x_HI/AAAAAAAABHE/6zLQWNF5LLk/s1600/IMAG1131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k6kfHzE5FVI/UvBcMJ8x_HI/AAAAAAAABHE/6zLQWNF5LLk/s1600/IMAG1131.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After this has dried for 24 hours, we removed the weights and then finished the bending. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QB7eb5U_6ws/Uv4eLIsPWQI/AAAAAAAABH8/QakC4NLSDXE/s1600/IMAG1133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QB7eb5U_6ws/Uv4eLIsPWQI/AAAAAAAABH8/QakC4NLSDXE/s1600/IMAG1133.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the underside of the small countertop. We bent over the edge and then used sheet metal screws to secure the bend. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iiKdaxXilCY/Uv4eWfRP7RI/AAAAAAAABIE/Soz4KFHZ8BI/s1600/IMAG1136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iiKdaxXilCY/Uv4eWfRP7RI/AAAAAAAABIE/Soz4KFHZ8BI/s1600/IMAG1136.jpg" height="400" width="225" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is a close up of the underside bend. The colored thing to the left is one of the exercise weights. The rough edge of the bend will be far enough underneath the countertop that it will be inside the Ikea drawers except for the overhang seating area of the peninsula. This is so there are no exposed edges for anyone to cut themselves on. We have a plan to take care of the edge for the peninsula. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aLqHYqgeB9Y/Uv4erjy3w8I/AAAAAAAABIQ/jRGXXXMf18A/s1600/IMAG1142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aLqHYqgeB9Y/Uv4erjy3w8I/AAAAAAAABIQ/jRGXXXMf18A/s1600/IMAG1142.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Back to work on the large section.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bBdQDUo6LP4/Uv4er_EI30I/AAAAAAAABIU/OQRSFniuT2k/s1600/IMAG1144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bBdQDUo6LP4/Uv4er_EI30I/AAAAAAAABIU/OQRSFniuT2k/s1600/IMAG1144.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Brian doing some calculations.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NFJ8MrcH1pY/Uv4fCrhDaSI/AAAAAAAABJY/RNDTcbJf3Uc/s1600/IMAG1161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NFJ8MrcH1pY/Uv4fCrhDaSI/AAAAAAAABJY/RNDTcbJf3Uc/s1600/IMAG1161.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And some measuring. We first put the sheet on the small L section as we need to bend in the inside corner.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b_m-vEaG4vc/Uv4fhHx1veI/AAAAAAAABKI/tUnHEs53to8/s1600/IMAG1168.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b_m-vEaG4vc/Uv4fhHx1veI/AAAAAAAABKI/tUnHEs53to8/s1600/IMAG1168.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Small section glued down and drying.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r5W_-HvWcXE/Uv4ffhkGRVI/AAAAAAAABJ0/kZPqiVKN1P8/s1600/IMAG1165.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r5W_-HvWcXE/Uv4ffhkGRVI/AAAAAAAABJ0/kZPqiVKN1P8/s1600/IMAG1165.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a> <br />
<br />
Bending the inside corner. We left the weights on top to help hold down the sheet while bending. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HLj_PJ5e3EQ/Uv4fgNYG-SI/AAAAAAAABJ8/NvdMOBFj1c4/s1600/IMAG1166.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HLj_PJ5e3EQ/Uv4fgNYG-SI/AAAAAAAABJ8/NvdMOBFj1c4/s1600/IMAG1166.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Another view of the inside corner bend. These small sections were very easy to bend, the large ones, a little more work. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u89EohORNkY/Uv4gRsknwUI/AAAAAAAABKk/YNXZOPETRu8/s1600/IMAG1174.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u89EohORNkY/Uv4gRsknwUI/AAAAAAAABKk/YNXZOPETRu8/s1600/IMAG1174.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a> <br />
<br />
And we repeat, by proceeding to the next section.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5E69AryHgQg/Uv4gQuaJFCI/AAAAAAAABKY/VgpljLaWPaw/s1600/IMAG1176.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5E69AryHgQg/Uv4gQuaJFCI/AAAAAAAABKY/VgpljLaWPaw/s1600/IMAG1176.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a> <br />
<br />
We lined up the back edge with the edge of the substructure, this is the edge of the final countertop that will be against the wall, and clamp it down. Brian then measures it and marks his cuts with a Sharpie.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hZkyi55pvng/Uv4gqXzTklI/AAAAAAAABLo/20FGIe9HAIE/s1600/IMAG1188.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hZkyi55pvng/Uv4gqXzTklI/AAAAAAAABLo/20FGIe9HAIE/s1600/IMAG1188.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a> <br />
<br />
Measure four times, cut once. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ro6INjwHrRE/Uv4ggqRd5sI/AAAAAAAABLA/fIaK5y-iQUQ/s1600/IMAG1181.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ro6INjwHrRE/Uv4ggqRd5sI/AAAAAAAABLA/fIaK5y-iQUQ/s1600/IMAG1181.jpg" height="400" width="225" /> </a><br />
<br />
Here's the cut sheet. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2PZt8GDiB6s/Uv4gg711aDI/AAAAAAAABLI/Leazn-3_WP8/s1600/IMAG1183.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2PZt8GDiB6s/Uv4gg711aDI/AAAAAAAABLI/Leazn-3_WP8/s1600/IMAG1183.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a><br />
<br />
Glued down with Sikaflex and then weighed down. Our shipment of wood flooring had just arrive and made for great evenly distributed weights. <br />
<br />

The final section.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dRQaWXeBGUs/Uv4gy6uzIVI/AAAAAAAABL4/fh-72iKuRV0/s1600/IMAG1193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dRQaWXeBGUs/Uv4gy6uzIVI/AAAAAAAABL4/fh-72iKuRV0/s1600/IMAG1193.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
After it dried we stacked even more boxes on it to hold it down while bending.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FasusJ5IPtQ/Uv4hpPwwYmI/AAAAAAAABMU/pfecxVyzN0Y/s1600/IMAG1256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FasusJ5IPtQ/Uv4hpPwwYmI/AAAAAAAABMU/pfecxVyzN0Y/s1600/IMAG1256.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Brian found a good use for our kitchen bench as he pounds away with a rubber mallet to bend the long edge. I really thought the final countertop was going to look really dented, but it was hardly noticeable. The aging process highlighted a few of the dents but it brought out more of the countertop's character.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M7sZmfcYJaw/Uv4ho1HHV-I/AAAAAAAABMQ/lUy1rExd8-s/s1600/IMAG1257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M7sZmfcYJaw/Uv4ho1HHV-I/AAAAAAAABMQ/lUy1rExd8-s/s1600/IMAG1257.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Final bent edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have a large kitchen and a lot of surface that needed countertops. So how much did this project run us? Well, I
had a local store price us some granite, $10,000.... I think not. I
know I could find cheaper granite but it would still cost $4-5,000 for a
kitchen this size. Total for the zinc countertops, around $1,200 for the zinc sheets, solder, sealant, plywood, and some miscellaneous items, sandpaper, steelwool, tools, etc. Not bad. I will put a second post detailing the aging process with acid and sealing.</div>

<strong>Putting in a moat.</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January 12th, 2014</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZnhOTFg4ic/Uu8MdT6FSVI/AAAAAAAAA9U/crvDHRtwtfI/s1600/IMAG1032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZnhOTFg4ic/Uu8MdT6FSVI/AAAAAAAAA9U/crvDHRtwtfI/s1600/IMAG1032.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So we had a new well put in and the water coming out of it is really gross. It started out white and now it looks yellow and it smells like bleach and as a bonus there is sand it in. Who's thirsty??? So we call the well guy and he says it's the digging mud and chlorine they use to start a new well. He tells us to run some water and it will clear up. So I pour 5 gallon bucket after bucket and heave them upstairs. Still stinky water. I call him back...what he meant was run a lot of water, like turn the hydrants on full force for 24 hours.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LAdbeKacqxc/Uu8McTiNbJI/AAAAAAAAA9A/H1e97Zf-IAg/s1600/IMAG1028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LAdbeKacqxc/Uu8McTiNbJI/AAAAAAAAA9A/H1e97Zf-IAg/s1600/IMAG1028.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We take advantage of one of the few 50 degree January days and create a moat around the house.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c52IICMWLaY/Uu8Mb7NTxTI/AAAAAAAAA84/U4gJuuC3008/s1600/IMAG1029.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c52IICMWLaY/Uu8Mb7NTxTI/AAAAAAAAA84/U4gJuuC3008/s1600/IMAG1029.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the back yard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DSIFgRo0PAA/Uu8Mb7n18jI/AAAAAAAAA88/PtROY-idGtU/s1600/IMAG1030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DSIFgRo0PAA/Uu8Mb7n18jI/AAAAAAAAA88/PtROY-idGtU/s1600/IMAG1030.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And the front yard and as a bonus people can't drive across our yard anymore. We have a driveway folks, it's that path with gravel and cement. This drives me crazy as I watch the soil get packed down more and more...I've got gardening plans for spring. Huge gardening plans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2uXf5TEawXs/Uu8Mc6ySUxI/AAAAAAAAA9Q/Jnop_9a0TiE/s1600/IMAG1031.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2uXf5TEawXs/Uu8Mc6ySUxI/AAAAAAAAA9Q/Jnop_9a0TiE/s1600/IMAG1031.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Drive across this...oh, and yes, the water is crystal clear now and doesn't smell at all.</div>
Kiffsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609948108299682772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580854656850891179.post-2796830767885291802014-02-02T19:56:00.000-08:002014-02-02T20:23:06.664-08:00Is there someone in the house???<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>I see a light</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January 11th, 2014</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ewgfi6HbS7A/Uu8MHrTEUtI/AAAAAAAAA8s/RkzXY-gYtgo/s1600/IMAG1021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ewgfi6HbS7A/Uu8MHrTEUtI/AAAAAAAAA8s/RkzXY-gYtgo/s1600/IMAG1021.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
So we are approaching the house and I see a light on inside. OMG, is someone in the house? AHHH, we have lights, it's the stair lights.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cXWbm5azBkU/Uu8MM1K9gqI/AAAAAAAAA80/zoTKJESDjAE/s1600/IMAG0983.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cXWbm5azBkU/Uu8MM1K9gqI/AAAAAAAAA80/zoTKJESDjAE/s1600/IMAG0983.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I scored these LED nightlights for $10 a piece at the local big box store. They make great stair lights. They only turn on when they don't detect enough light and they light up the stair way perfectly. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3dxRaJUZgi4/Uu8RsgoAe0I/AAAAAAAAA98/hHvxmDaOEDU/s1600/IMAG1024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3dxRaJUZgi4/Uu8RsgoAe0I/AAAAAAAAA98/hHvxmDaOEDU/s1600/IMAG1024.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then I see this...the ceiling fan in the main room. Oh, how I love this fan. Yes, the fans spin and the entire thing spins around.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KKXEcWEUskQ/Uu8Rsks4TTI/AAAAAAAAA94/T4iIKT8Vf5Y/s1600/IMAG1023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KKXEcWEUskQ/Uu8Rsks4TTI/AAAAAAAAA94/T4iIKT8Vf5Y/s1600/IMAG1023.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's one of the only things in the house that has a remote that I care to operate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PGvDzMxyei0/Uu8ToSXcULI/AAAAAAAAA_M/Yg9dDLvBKBc/s1600/IMAG1109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PGvDzMxyei0/Uu8ToSXcULI/AAAAAAAAA_M/Yg9dDLvBKBc/s1600/IMAG1109.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
And lights in the purple bathroom, of course they're from Ikea. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YMsaoS72cKI/Uu8Sdiwx2MI/AAAAAAAAA-Q/nJLPXMkoDiI/s1600/IMAG1081.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YMsaoS72cKI/Uu8Sdiwx2MI/AAAAAAAAA-Q/nJLPXMkoDiI/s1600/IMAG1081.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And a whole bunch of these hanging around the house. They are mini pendant lights with no fixtures, cause I'm making them. More on that later. </div>
Kiffsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609948108299682772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580854656850891179.post-47433816880664845612014-02-02T19:39:00.000-08:002014-02-02T19:39:05.365-08:00Moving an electrical outlet and preparing for the electrician.<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>We're moving...an outlet.</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January 10th, 2014</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TtwrkT-olTc/UumV8qlNQ7I/AAAAAAAAA7I/eO3iyoNOop8/s1600/IMAG0989.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TtwrkT-olTc/UumV8qlNQ7I/AAAAAAAAA7I/eO3iyoNOop8/s1600/IMAG0989.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Electrician is coming to put in the lights. I gather all the light fixtures I have been collected from various places over the last year and label them all with the corresponding room they go in and pile them in the living room. I always use tape on the boxes instead of just writing directly on them in case a light doesn't work and needs to be exchanged or returned to the store.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zrAyJT1z_9U/UumXaVRgwUI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/CGqaymd84KQ/s1600/IMAG0993.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zrAyJT1z_9U/UumXaVRgwUI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/CGqaymd84KQ/s1600/IMAG0993.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
And then we have this little problem, I mean opportunity. This outlet was installed too close to the cabinet. Wouldn't normally be a problem, but we have two more cabinets that stack on top of this one. So we have to move it over. Brian has already managed to get the gang box out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ai5qJ8WcojM/UumYA-qLZaI/AAAAAAAAA7g/6wilt4rhUvY/s1600/IMAG0994.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ai5qJ8WcojM/UumYA-qLZaI/AAAAAAAAA7g/6wilt4rhUvY/s1600/IMAG0994.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here we mark the new location in pencil. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KslzZ0VWiuQ/UumYA4lsFhI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/pQ6x7kHYlcE/s1600/IMAG0995.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KslzZ0VWiuQ/UumYA4lsFhI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/pQ6x7kHYlcE/s1600/IMAG0995.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cut out the drywall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Put in a new gang box and put a square of drywall in with some drywall clips.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A little plaster, some primer, and paint and we are in business.</div>

<b> What a difference an inch makes.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January 9th, 2014</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hwHthY6BIz8/UuCUgHAqP7I/AAAAAAAAA5M/tetl2NYyZJE/s1600/IMAG1002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hwHthY6BIz8/UuCUgHAqP7I/AAAAAAAAA5M/tetl2NYyZJE/s1600/IMAG1002.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the floor of our shower. It's a shower pan from Onyx. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J9UXt4WdbzY/UuCUoTtC1gI/AAAAAAAAA5U/VeLclsVohek/s1600/IMAG0929.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J9UXt4WdbzY/UuCUoTtC1gI/AAAAAAAAA5U/VeLclsVohek/s1600/IMAG0929.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's awesome, except that it is an inch too narrow for the shower
door. Either the guy at the kitchen and bath place ordered it wrong or it was made incorrectly, the jury is
still out on that one. What we do know is that they want it returned to the manufacturer to be fixed. No problem.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QK3pt2DSmNY/UuCU8CtTJLI/AAAAAAAAA5g/WFGk0mt4Fyo/s1600/IMAG1008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QK3pt2DSmNY/UuCU8CtTJLI/AAAAAAAAA5g/WFGk0mt4Fyo/s1600/IMAG1008.jpg" height="400" width="225" /> </a> </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just remove a little drywall. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FZ1K46G1VPw/UuCU8O-6mBI/AAAAAAAAA5s/BmUW4p84aPY/s1600/IMAG1009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FZ1K46G1VPw/UuCU8O-6mBI/AAAAAAAAA5s/BmUW4p84aPY/s1600/IMAG1009.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A little more... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

There. Now, to get it to the store. It only weighs probably close to 200 pounds. I'll just throw that in the truck.<br />

<b>Coming out of the box...</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January 5th-8th, 2014</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gHkVrELcgsg/Ut9LZ59WiNI/AAAAAAAAA5A/Bmaaz_1RYPk/s1600/IMAG0922.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gHkVrELcgsg/Ut9LZ59WiNI/AAAAAAAAA5A/Bmaaz_1RYPk/s1600/IMAG0922.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
We finally get to take it out of it's box. The dishwasher, oh how I have missed you. This was another one of my Black Friday deals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FKZasWjrAUM/Ut9JqBb5KMI/AAAAAAAAA4E/BhquT3e0yNo/s1600/IMAG0969.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FKZasWjrAUM/Ut9JqBb5KMI/AAAAAAAAA4E/BhquT3e0yNo/s1600/IMAG0969.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GGvZq2BWFSw/Ut9JqYLSwnI/AAAAAAAAA38/boj76WRB7Ig/s1600/IMAG0970.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GGvZq2BWFSw/Ut9JqYLSwnI/AAAAAAAAA38/boj76WRB7Ig/s1600/IMAG0970.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The electricians are back and we get outlets and light switches. Oh, you don't realize how much you miss something like electricity until you don't have it. I have gotten so used to using flashlights at the house that it takes a while to train my brain to use the light switches when I go in a room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HPJofMlwxlI/Ut9Jrg1b7GI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/dQwD1nqDfYA/s1600/IMAG0975.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HPJofMlwxlI/Ut9Jrg1b7GI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/dQwD1nqDfYA/s1600/IMAG0975.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
And we get our real heater. It's much quieter and warmer than the temp.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--F1cuNAkXNY/Ut9LWrS1v7I/AAAAAAAAA44/X_48GdmYg6U/s1600/IMAG0968.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--F1cuNAkXNY/Ut9LWrS1v7I/AAAAAAAAA44/X_48GdmYg6U/s1600/IMAG0968.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
And a another box arrives.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vNOUjPLFi7w/Ut9JqWpCvwI/AAAAAAAAA4A/uf03fco57kI/s1600/IMAG0971.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vNOUjPLFi7w/Ut9JqWpCvwI/AAAAAAAAA4A/uf03fco57kI/s1600/IMAG0971.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a "sample" box of wood flooring. I ordered one box so that I really get a good look at it and evaluate the quality of a box before ordering the giant wood floor shipment.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GiBlmgtZ6I4/Ut9Jq1df5gI/AAAAAAAAA4I/SzRPOjEAHyY/s1600/IMAG0972.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GiBlmgtZ6I4/Ut9Jq1df5gI/AAAAAAAAA4I/SzRPOjEAHyY/s1600/IMAG0972.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And of course I have to unpack the whole box just so I can look at it. This is really going to warm up the rooms. We are putting in the wood floors in all the upstairs rooms except the bathrooms, laundry, and the 2nd bedroom. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9DWZhtQfyRk/Ut9JrMRAefI/AAAAAAAAA4g/2YGBxCxqKz0/s1600/IMAG0973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9DWZhtQfyRk/Ut9JrMRAefI/AAAAAAAAA4g/2YGBxCxqKz0/s1600/IMAG0973.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I am loving the colors and patterns and the floor has a matte finish so it is not nearly as slippery as the floors in our last house.<br />

<b>Yes, make it a large.</b></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

I don't know about you, but when I order cabinets and they ask if I want to supersize, I always say, yes.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I believe this is the largest kitchen cabinet that Ikea sells. How large is it you ask? 88" x 30" It's going to house 3 drawers, a wall oven, a microwave, and than some storage above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This is Seth, my brother-in-law. He and my sister stopped by to help us lift the wall oven into the cabinet. Thanks for the help guys, we really appreciate it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WPdGGFMe48c/UtYK7vcgvGI/AAAAAAAAA1s/GWwAWbtD2mU/s1600/IMAG0897.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WPdGGFMe48c/UtYK7vcgvGI/AAAAAAAAA1s/GWwAWbtD2mU/s400/IMAG0897.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Unpacking the unit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TVcn27ocBY8/UtYK9bcm7DI/AAAAAAAAA2A/C60nLwl5drA/s1600/IMAG0898.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TVcn27ocBY8/UtYK9bcm7DI/AAAAAAAAA2A/C60nLwl5drA/s400/IMAG0898.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Remove the oven door and packing materials. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gJE779iOyKM/UtYLByFSa4I/AAAAAAAAA2w/azCwwybEeqk/s1600/IMAG0905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gJE779iOyKM/UtYLByFSa4I/AAAAAAAAA2w/azCwwybEeqk/s400/IMAG0905.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here we all are, thinking...that shelf is supposed to hold an oven. That can't be right. We should really test it out first, don't want to break the new oven. What could we use that be okay if it fell?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qbHHFcoBI5U/UtYLD_P0ysI/AAAAAAAAA3E/iuB_JPP4Vj4/s1600/IMAG0907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qbHHFcoBI5U/UtYLD_P0ysI/AAAAAAAAA3E/iuB_JPP4Vj4/s400/IMAG0907.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh here, let's get Kiffany to test it. Nothing broke, so we must have a success. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sdeWeIQhYaU/UtYN0yfUzmI/AAAAAAAAA3U/xOq82AUO8mc/s1600/IMAG0908.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sdeWeIQhYaU/UtYN0yfUzmI/AAAAAAAAA3U/xOq82AUO8mc/s400/IMAG0908.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
And tada...team work, wins again. The gap below the oven will be filled with a trim strip that came with the oven and a small filler strip. This is our first wall oven. I am really liking the final height. I anticipated a complicated install but it really just sits on the shelf and then a few screws to secure it to the cabinet frame in the front. There is a hole in the back of the shelf that electric cord goes in and the electrician hooked it up behind the drawers.Kiffsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609948108299682772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580854656850891179.post-88480020850663039572014-01-14T20:11:00.000-08:002014-01-15T05:34:46.096-08:00Installing the high cabinets in the kitchen.<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Standing in this corner at a staggering 92"...</b><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
January 4th</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-npO_DksbRkY/UtYIPv9xStI/AAAAAAAAA08/QMjPTqu2eJk/s1600/IMAG0888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-npO_DksbRkY/UtYIPv9xStI/AAAAAAAAA08/QMjPTqu2eJk/s400/IMAG0888.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the back corner of our kitchen. Looks sad and empty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-koSRlH4Kvxk/UtYIQ7pKGQI/AAAAAAAAA1I/nsc4CYcq3Ss/s1600/IMAG0891.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-koSRlH4Kvxk/UtYIQ7pKGQI/AAAAAAAAA1I/nsc4CYcq3Ss/s400/IMAG0891.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is an Ikea 88"x 24" high cabinet. Looks perfect for the job. We will also be installing a slightly shorter version in the master bath instead of a linen closet, 80".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bGKUmk0vIEQ/UtYIQ0kkHCI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/kqKf4c2ZPbY/s1600/IMAG0892.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bGKUmk0vIEQ/UtYIQ0kkHCI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/kqKf4c2ZPbY/s320/IMAG0892.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Here both high cabinets are installed, they are 15" and 24" cabinets. They will be great for storing large roasters, slow cookers, cheese making supplies, and possibly some food. We also had the electrician put in an outlet above so we can decorate later, good thing I got the final height right for him, remember we have cabinet, toekick and hardwood floors to account in your measurements.Kiffsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609948108299682772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580854656850891179.post-49012515496357089892014-01-13T20:23:00.001-08:002014-01-14T05:33:29.293-08:00Kitchen cabinet internal fittings.<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>What's a gal to do?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January 1-2nd, 2014</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HvsZ6tbhLkk/UtS4UvKF6XI/AAAAAAAAA0U/iSJUk4UkktU/s1600/IMAG0902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HvsZ6tbhLkk/UtS4UvKF6XI/AAAAAAAAA0U/iSJUk4UkktU/s400/IMAG0902.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So Brian decided to kick the year off by getting the flu. Evidently he wanted to get it out of the way early this year. So what's a gal to do on a construction site by herself, play with power tools. I work on putting in the drawer partitions, drawers, and internal fittings in the cabinets. Here I am putting together a drawer, yes they come in flat boxes and you have to assembly them.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T_H8F1IY4Ds/UtS42iGuMGI/AAAAAAAAA00/hY6A50Di7Cw/s1600/IMAG0938.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T_H8F1IY4Ds/UtS42iGuMGI/AAAAAAAAA00/hY6A50Di7Cw/s400/IMAG0938.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And since I don't have the flu, order pizza. No, not really this is the parts to the giant lazy susans that go in the corner cabs.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9JY86K_MiAo/UtS4m1SS5II/AAAAAAAAA0k/CU37dGW_2y4/s1600/IMAG0944.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9JY86K_MiAo/UtS4m1SS5II/AAAAAAAAA0k/CU37dGW_2y4/s400/IMAG0944.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Putting together Ikea cabinets is a lot like a giant puzzle, which I happen to enjoy. I love putting them together. But you do need to be prepared there are many, many pieces with Swedish names. This is the level of detail you are installing, these are the rail holders for the lazy susans.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fTqpHiQ0r8A/UtS4nPvabeI/AAAAAAAAA0g/MzICaPNablM/s1600/IMAG0945.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fTqpHiQ0r8A/UtS4nPvabeI/AAAAAAAAA0g/MzICaPNablM/s400/IMAG0945.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a finished lazy susan.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

And we have internal fittings. And drawers and drawers and drawers. I will putting together drawers till spring. In this picture you can see the rails the drawers will go on that I installed. I removed the actual drawers so they wouldn't get damaged during the rest of the construction. Building them was fun, but once is enough.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
And then in my spare time, I finish the last coat of paint in the living room and dining area.</div>

<b>A little to the left, now right, perfect. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
December 31, 2013</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-66JlODUyVMs/Us9w91QFNBI/AAAAAAAAAzw/l9U0iuvLmZ4/s1600/IMAG0874.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-66JlODUyVMs/Us9w91QFNBI/AAAAAAAAAzw/l9U0iuvLmZ4/s1600/IMAG0874.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So the last thing we do in the house for 2013 is dry run the master bath cabinets. These are the same type of cabinets we put in the kitchen only they will get different door styles and cover panels. This is a 15" and 24" base cabs. Now we do use the Ikea legs on these cabs for several reasons:<br />
<br />
1. we are using Ikea's toekicks and they are made to attach to this style of legs<br />
2. these cabs are against a wall and don't need the extra support<br />
3. this is a bathroom and the Ikea legs are plastic which is water resistance, wood is not<br />
4. we had a whole bunch of legs left from our last kitchen install from our last house (anyone need Ikea cabinet legs, contact me)<br />
<br />
We are dry running here which means we are not attaching these cabs to the wall yet. We are figuring out our spacing with the pedestal sinks. And determining how far we need to bring the sinks forward for comfort. We will be building out a ledge behind each sink. This will bring another design feature to the room and provide some bonus storage.<br />

<b>Cabinet installation day is finally here!</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>December 30th, 2013</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QV071ZFLgwU/Us4jqlAyK1I/AAAAAAAAAyY/Vt0-7na94_s/s1600/IMAG0878.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QV071ZFLgwU/Us4jqlAyK1I/AAAAAAAAAyY/Vt0-7na94_s/s1600/IMAG0878.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Before we could install the first cabinet we had to build the first cabinet. You want to start with the corner cabinets and we hadn't assembled the corner cabinets yet. We assembled the other cabinets earlier in our basement. The corner cabinets are large 37" x 37" and awkward shaped, like a Tetras piece, to carry up the stairs so we put them together upstairs close to the kitchen. We didn't do this earlier as they would be in the way and likely to get broken with drywallers and such running around. This is the cabinet on it's side and we are looking into the bottom. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1HWAWd7hwRw/Us4lCBZxqFI/AAAAAAAAAyk/kYciS2zG4oI/s1600/IMAG0880.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1HWAWd7hwRw/Us4lCBZxqFI/AAAAAAAAAyk/kYciS2zG4oI/s1600/IMAG0880.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then it's a matter of lifting the cabinet, setting it on the frame, confirming its level and screwing it to the wall with giant toggle screws. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g3PBrpnuA_Q/Us4lCGgqN-I/AAAAAAAAAyo/ciI8WUO8CgU/s1600/IMAG0881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g3PBrpnuA_Q/Us4lCGgqN-I/AAAAAAAAAyo/ciI8WUO8CgU/s1600/IMAG0881.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here it is a close up of it sitting on the frame. Cabinet one, done, now only about 20 left to go. No, really, I bought 20 some cabinets for the house.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7WcjPBGLS7M/Us4mQovl2lI/AAAAAAAAAzA/K43jwBRkkwg/s1600/IMAG0885.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7WcjPBGLS7M/Us4mQovl2lI/AAAAAAAAAzA/K43jwBRkkwg/s1600/IMAG0885.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now it's just a matter of rinse and repeat. Next cabinet goes in place, screws to the wall and get toggle screwed to the cabinet next to it. And check that you are level.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nkH7cqViDwo/Us4mpNbU1nI/AAAAAAAAAzI/PzCdbmDPnzc/s1600/IMAG0884.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nkH7cqViDwo/Us4mpNbU1nI/AAAAAAAAAzI/PzCdbmDPnzc/s1600/IMAG0884.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We drilled holes in the backerboard for all the electrical wiring, plumbing, etc. This is that cooktop cable again.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last day of the year to get your cabinets installed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5AAeyQ6_ZAM/Us4nFIsP3EI/AAAAAAAAAzY/AYAcuReGTGg/s1600/IMAG0886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5AAeyQ6_ZAM/Us4nFIsP3EI/AAAAAAAAAzY/AYAcuReGTGg/s1600/IMAG0886.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There you go, that wasn't so hard. We still have more to go, but it's coming along nicely. Now if you are Ikea knowledgeable or even kitchen cabinet knowledgeable you might be saying, "they didn't install the wall cabinets, everyone knows those go up first". Well most of our wall cabs are going to rest on the countertop and stack and the rest we want to ensure are at the same height as the stacked cabinets. So we are putting in bases first, then countertop, then wall cabs. And who wants to do it the easy way anyway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b> I swear, I was framed.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
December 29th, 2013</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KgnINUtQNf4/Us4dGj4KqkI/AAAAAAAAAxw/a-T6J5US-Kg/s1600/IMAG0871.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KgnINUtQNf4/Us4dGj4KqkI/AAAAAAAAAxw/a-T6J5US-Kg/s1600/IMAG0871.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Putting in framing for the kitchen cabinets. We are installing Ikea kitchen cabinets, but the instructions will tell you if your cabinets are not going against a wall, which of course we have a peninsula, that you need to use some form of framing to secure your cabinets instead of just using the Ikea legs. Well, Ikea doesn't really tell you how to do this. We find that two 2x4's attached to each other and then to subfloors gives you the perfect height. Our countertops should be around 36", I say, should be, because we are making those too, later on that. This framing will give you a 4 1/4" toekick after putting in 3/4" hardwood floors. We are also making our own toekicks instead of using Ikeas, so the framing we also allow us to just nail the toekick right to this frame. It's much harder to attach it to the Ikea legs as they use a grove cut in their toekicks for installation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1jSHxnsCLFI/Us4dGL0RdPI/AAAAAAAAAxo/crbOEpPo88c/s1600/IMAG0872.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1jSHxnsCLFI/Us4dGL0RdPI/AAAAAAAAAxo/crbOEpPo88c/s1600/IMAG0872.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since we had to make the frame for the peninsula, we just continued it for all the cabinets. The wire sticking out of the wall is for the cooktop.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sO95TiAd-nc/Us4dGqolevI/AAAAAAAAAxs/JDUtJJ7StJ4/s1600/IMAG0873.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sO95TiAd-nc/Us4dGqolevI/AAAAAAAAAxs/JDUtJJ7StJ4/s1600/IMAG0873.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the plumbing for the sink and the square hole is a an air vent.
We left a 12 1/4" gap in the framing for the air vent in the toekick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MyP7xkUas7M/Us4i5XdXhII/AAAAAAAAAyM/COFO4qofU58/s1600/IMAG0879.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MyP7xkUas7M/Us4i5XdXhII/AAAAAAAAAyM/COFO4qofU58/s1600/IMAG0879.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And then we also screwed another 2x4 to the wall so that it's at the same height as the frame. The cabinets will sit on top of that board against the wall. Make sure you screw that into the studs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UUTG-MOnshc/Us4f3rAcIZI/AAAAAAAAAx4/rn-2WtVQdnA/s1600/IMAG0877.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UUTG-MOnshc/Us4f3rAcIZI/AAAAAAAAAx4/rn-2WtVQdnA/s1600/IMAG0877.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Bridget what are you doing in that spiffy painting outfit? Are those special painting socks? I sure hope so. Bridget puts the first coat of what turns out to be many coats of paint in the main bathroom. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fB4nWeokhLE/UsuDDqjIadI/AAAAAAAAAwQ/DB_1CtTFT1k/s1600/IMAG0918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fB4nWeokhLE/UsuDDqjIadI/AAAAAAAAAwQ/DB_1CtTFT1k/s1600/IMAG0918.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the paint color for the top half of the main bath. The bottom half of the room will be white beadboard. The top half however, is Behr Vintage Grape color matched to Sherwin William's HGTV Satin Paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l-Ab0iRRBJI/UsuDraUovBI/AAAAAAAAAwY/hKEd9rUQmMs/s1600/IMAG0916.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l-Ab0iRRBJI/UsuDraUovBI/AAAAAAAAAwY/hKEd9rUQmMs/s1600/IMAG0916.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a dark and rich color. Can't wait tell we get actual lighting and then you will be able to see what it really looks like. I love the color, hate painting with it. Every roller mark, every blemish in the drywall, every spec of lint and dust (which of course we don't have during construction) shows in this paint. Which is why in January, I'm still painting this room. Four coats later and over a gallon of paint for half a bathroom. But the drama in the room it creates and stark contrast with the white will pay off. This picture is after the second coat. After the first coat I touched all the new blemishes we were seeing then painted a second coat. The second coated showed the plaster marks from the touch ups. So I did a skim coat with plaster, sanded again and then reprimed those areas. Mostly all the corners as you see in this picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Third coat...looking better. I have some final touches to do and one corner that needs a fourth coat.<br />
<br />

<br />
Here you can see the stark contrast with the white tub. I will get better pictures once we have lights installed in the room.<br />

December 27th, 2013</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b6QosiFJCLQ/Ust2SpgrkZI/AAAAAAAAAr8/X7T-sInyEFE/s1600/IMAG0856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b6QosiFJCLQ/Ust2SpgrkZI/AAAAAAAAAr8/X7T-sInyEFE/s1600/IMAG0856.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So I vowed not to do what I usually do when we paint in our house. Buy a color, paint 3/4 of a room and then decide the color just isn't right and get another color and repaint. Instead I buy a whole bunch of samples and make some sort of artwork on the wall and bug everyone I know about what color they like. Here I am looking for that perfect gray neutral for the walls. Everyone on Pinterest swears by Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore, I try it and it's way too tan. It's that dark strip second to the left. I end up going with the large patch on the right, Storington Gray from Benjamin Moore color matched to Sherwin William's HGTV Satin paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WdGOm1BRnoI/Ust3ICklMGI/AAAAAAAAAtA/3ttaM8JG18E/s1600/IMAG0857.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WdGOm1BRnoI/Ust3ICklMGI/AAAAAAAAAtA/3ttaM8JG18E/s1600/IMAG0857.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's Bridget, my sister, who was nice enough to come help paint. Thanks Bridget! We painted this color in the stairwell and the upstairs main living space and kitchen. Later on it will also be the main color downstairs to tie all the spaces together. It's the perfect gray. It's gray enough to actually look gray but also a very light neutral color which we needed since the space is so large that anything darker would overwhelm the space. And it's a great neutral that will make accents pop. It's also light enough that the darker grays I have planned will stand out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

Painting goes great, except for the corners, which for some unknown reason crack terribly. I don't know if was the primer, the drywall mud, or a combination of the two but I end up scraping the mud out of all the corners, filling it in with plaster, sanding, and then painting the corners.Kiffsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609948108299682772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580854656850891179.post-32065541033262176442014-01-05T20:35:00.001-08:002014-01-06T20:08:49.920-08:0025 gallons of primer later...December 26th, 2013<br />

This is our newly constructed ceiling. It's made out of unfinished pine and although it is beautiful just as nature intended, it's a little too cabin in the woods looking for our house design, so just like the walls it gets a nice coat of white.<br />

And just to make sure we get every surface white, we spray primer on the basement floor. Why? Good question, because when you go to buy carpet they will ask if the floor is primed. Priming gives the carpet glue better adhesion, it also acts as a waterproofer since cement is actually porous. And we already had the sprayer out and filled with primer so it was a great time to get it done. </div>

It's hard to see what this is but it's a plant ledge over the staircase in our house. And it's really high, pretty sure no plant will be surviving up there. Well, we have to prime and paint the stairs.</div>

So we rent this aluminum walk plank thingie from the local Menards. Yes, you can rent a death trap for only $0.50 day. I don't understand why they rent DIYers with no business doing a tight rope act one of these. They didn't even offer life insurance to us, wonder why?</div>

Now I might be going on a ledge here, but that is dedication to decor. I shimmed out there and painted the stairwell. Not sure how often the decorations in the plant ledge are getting updated.Kiffsterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609948108299682772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580854656850891179.post-64558027770179228162014-01-04T20:45:00.003-08:002014-01-06T08:25:10.194-08:00I'm dreaming of a white Chirstmas takes on a whole new meaning.December 19th-27th, 2013<br />

The priming marathon begins. It has us 6 full vacation days to get every room primed. We start off by patching any holes in the whole and fixing any blemishes, sanding that down, then dry mopping the walls to get the dust down, then wiping them down with tack cloths, vacuuming everything, floors, outlets, windows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1LXv0iRwJsU/UsjY3jOfW-I/AAAAAAAAAlw/Juf3NV3Qwn4/s1600/IMAG0814.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1LXv0iRwJsU/UsjY3jOfW-I/AAAAAAAAAlw/Juf3NV3Qwn4/s400/IMAG0814.jpg" height="400" width="225" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then finally taping off the ceilings. </div>

<br />
It's warm, unseasonably warm, like in the 60's in December warm, so we figured it's our only opportunity before spring to paint the garage while it's relatively clean and empty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g6-Hi4PskXg/UsjY08_e6tI/AAAAAAAAAk0/OYkmUqlfQCw/s1600/IMAG0808.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g6-Hi4PskXg/UsjY08_e6tI/AAAAAAAAAk0/OYkmUqlfQCw/s400/IMAG0808.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we empty it out.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bkaza0xBTGI/UsjY3GaQXJI/AAAAAAAAAlY/ve0U8DjUhY4/s1600/IMAG0809.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bkaza0xBTGI/UsjY3GaQXJI/AAAAAAAAAlY/ve0U8DjUhY4/s400/IMAG0809.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Buy some primer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
